'Thousands hit' by Guadalcanal quake in Solomon Islands - Thousands of people in remote villages have been affected by an earthquake on the famed World War II island of Guadalcanal. Only now is the aftermath being revealed - after the quake struck the Weather Coast, on the south of the Solomon chain's main island, late in July. The tremors set off landslides that covered villagers' gardens. The villages of Veramogho and Veuru are desperately short of food. Twenty-six houses were destroyed but there are no reports of deaths. The alarm was raised by a local Anglican priest, who managed to get to the private resort island of Tavanipupu, in Marau Sound, at the eastern tip of Guadalcanal. He told her thousands of people had been affected by the July 25 quake. "If the priest is to be believed, he said 15,000. I thought he said 1,500, but on questioning him he said, 'No, no, I mean 15,000', and I kept asking and he kept saying 15,000." The first aid boat she sent with supplies had to turn back because of high seas. They finally got under way again on Friday. "The reason it's called the Weather Coast is because the mountains come straight down to the sea and the wind is from that direction, so there's a huge surf on that side of Guadalcanal. So boats cannot land there." The geography also means no roads or airstrips in the immediate location. "From every report I've got, and it's not first-hand, there is serious hardship." She has heard that a broader aid mission is under way but so far it has been small-scale relief. "We had an American doctor visiting and she gave $US500, which we just spent for food, and we sent $5,000 Solomon of our own plus fuel, another $5,000 in fuel." After two days, the earthquake swarm in Southern California appears to be slowing down - A series of more than 30 small to moderate temblors jolted the region beginning Tuesday night. Aftershocks continued into Wednesday and Thursday. www.radioaustralia.net.au/international/2012-08-10/thousands-hit-by-guadalcanal-quake/997352After two days, the earthquake swarm in Southern California appears to be slowing down

www.heraldsun.com.au/news/earthquake-near-a-major-city-with-death-toll-unprecedented-in-human-history-a-matter-of-time-professor-iain-stewart/story-e6frf7jo-1226446246156It's only a matter of time before a huge earthquake strikes a major city and results in a death toll "UNPRECEDENTED IN HUMAN HISTORY". A well-known Scottish scientist delivered that grim prediction Wednesday. The risk of disaster has grown because a growing number of mega-cities are built on or near major earthquake faults. Large settlements since antiquity have been based on these fault lines because they also help provide water and are usually located near flat plains ideally suited for growing crops. This "fatal attraction" to dangerous areas was "actually a good thing", because historically the trade-off was worth it since earthquakes were rare and most cities were not that large. While earthquakes today were often less destructive because of improved building codes, more people are affected because cities are larger. Despite the danger of such hazards, people were still drawn to earthquake-prone California, and the US gulf states which are routinely hit by hurricanes. Although it might seem that the number of natural disasters around the world is increasing, there are simply more people living in harm's way, and that fact creates the illusion. "We create the template that brings these disasters." Similarly, people want to live only 20m from the beach, even in regions liable to be struck by tsunamis. Even after properties have been destroyed, many owners vow to rebuild. Further research is needed to understand why people continued to have such a high threshold for living in danger zones and why they often chose to ignore the science that could save their lives.

Overcrowded hospitals in northwest Iran struggled to cope with thousands of earthquake victims on Sunday as rescuers raced to reach remote villages after the two powerful quakes killed nearly 300 people. Thousands huddled in makeshift camps or slept in the street after Saturday's quakes for fear of more aftershocks, 60 of which had already struck. A lack of tents and other supplies left them exposed to the night chill. The worst damage and most casualties appeared to have been in rural villages around the towns of Ahar, Varzaghan and Harees, near the major city of Tabriz. But Iranian officials said rescue operations had ended by Sunday afternoon and that all those trapped beneath the rubble had been freed. Many villages are hard to reach by road, hindering rescue efforts. Hospitals in Tabriz, Ardabil and other cities nearby took in many of the injured, and there were long queues of survivors waiting to be treated. "I wanted to go there last night to help but heard there was bad traffic and that it wasn't safe enough. People in those villages need help." "Despite the promises of officials, little first aide has been distributed in the region and most people are left without tents. If the situation continues, the toll will rise." There were traffic jams on the narrow road to Tabriz as victims tried to reach hospitals. The U.S. Geological Survey measured Saturday's first quake at 6.4 magnitude and said it struck 60 km (37 miles) northeast of the city of Tabriz, a trading hub far from Iran's oil-producing areas and known nuclear facilities. The second, measuring 6.3, struck 11 minutes later near Varzaghan, 49 km (30 miles) northeast of Tabriz. More than 1,000 villages in the area were affected by the earthquakes. Some 130 villages suffered more than 70 percent damage, and 20 villages were completely destroyed. "One good thing was that the earthquake happened during the day, so many people were not in their homes. If it had happened at night the casualties would have been far worse." 5,000 people are believed to be injured. About 36,000 people in the quake-hit area have been given emergency shelter. "Relief groups have still not reached many villages, because in normal conditions some of these villages are several hours away. Currently the roads are closed and the only way to reach these villages is by air." Photographs posted on Iranian news websites showed numerous bodies, including children, lying on the floor of a white-tiled morgue in Ahar and medical staff treating the injured in the open air as dusk fell on Saturday. Other images showed rescue workers digging people out of rubble - some alive, many dead. Iran is crisscrossed by major fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years. Saturday's quakes struck in East Azerbaijan province, a mountainous region that neighbors Azerbaijan and Armenia to the north. Buildings in Tabriz, the provincial capital, are substantially built and nobody in the city had been killed or hurt. Homes and business premises in Iranian villages, however, are often made of concrete blocks or mud brick that can crumble and collapse in a strong quake. Water, electricity, and phone lines in the area of Varzaghan are all down, further hindering rescue efforts. abriz residents left their homes and crowded the streets following the two quakes. "Everyone was scared last night. They set up tents and were sleeping in the streets and in parks." www.reuters.com/article/2012/08/12/us-iran-earthquake-idUSBRE87A08N20120812?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&rpc=71&google_editors_picks=true______________________________________ Live Seismograms - Worldwide (update every 30 minutes) This morning - None 5.0 or higher. earthquake.usgs.gov/monitoring/operations/heliplots_gsn.php
